Puto Maya Easy No-Steamer Recipe
Puto Maya is one of the most well-loved delicacy in the Philippines. It’s great for breakfast or as an afternoon snack.
People love it so much that it is available all year round especially in the local markets but still not many people cook it at home on a regular basis because traditional Puto Maya is cooked in a putohan or a large steamer and not all households have these gadgets. This is why most Pinoys prefer to buy it from their favorite putohan.
However you can try this recipe if you want to know how to cook Puto Maya without using a steamer or a putohan, you can just use your friendly rice-cooker and make this sweet and rich treat anytime at home.
1kg (4 cups) Glutinous rice
4 cups Coconut milk
1 cup coconut cream
1 cup water
1 cup Sugar
Small ginger root peeled and mashed
1 tsp lime or lemon rind or kalamansi
2 tsp salt
Wash and soak glutinous rice in water for at least 2-3 hours or overnight. Place glutinous rice with the water in a rice cooker. Add coconut milk and coconut cream, cover and cook over a white rice setting until it comes to a boil. Add ginger, sugar, lemon rind, salt and mix well. Let it simmer until rice is done. Discard ginger and mould cooked sticky rice with cups or wrap in banana leaves in a triangular shape. Serve with ripe mangoes and sikwate (hot choco) or sprinkle more sugar if you want.
